We've been going here for years ( before the movie was made) service was great before the movie then slowly went down hill. I think that got to their heads a little but needless to say we keep coming back every winter by snowmobiles and summer. Food is almost always good. Every now and then they'll have a slip up. The baked French onion soup is a must everytime, prime rib and duck on Saturdays are good but I pretty much always get the chicken parm! This past weekend we had a great server, young man whom we've never seen before and he was great!! Oh, can't forget they have a good breakfast too!

We head up to Mercer every summer & venture out to try some of the local cuisine. With all the history around LBL, we had to go! We came in on a Wednesday night around 6. When we stepped in the front door there was plenty of old newpaper articles about the Dilliner/FBI shootout. I really enjoy history, so I was happy to take a look. One of the owners was hostessing & took us to our table. Since we had our 2 children with us, they sat us in the far room with all the other families with kids...made sense. Bonus she sat us in the corner right where there are 2 windows with bullet holes preserved! Very cool! Our waitress seemed to be having a bummer of the day because I don't recall one smile until she delivered the bill. Apparently, the "family" section is the dreaded section for the servers. We were started off with a basket of warm bread, with a southwestern spread & a bowl of a pinto bean salad. All were great. With our entrees we each had the baked (swiss) french onion soup & this was also extremely tasty! The soup alone will make me go back! I ordered one of the nightly specials, the White Fish w/ pico de gallo & it was extremely fresh and very good. Slightly spicy with some jalapeno in the pico... this made me happy! My wife had the Shrimp scampi over rice. She said it was lacking a little something, but couldn't put her finger on exactly what it was. I taste tested & found it very plain. We left stuffed, satisfied with our history tour & will be back!

This a great place to eat if u are up in the woods. The experience Is great. Their is still bullet holes in the walls; news papers of the day it happened. The food is good to. They have a very nice outdoor patio. The view of he lake is amazing.

Service was slow, and we had to wait on our table, even though they did not appear to be too busy and we had a reservation. Otherwise, out of our party of 5, we were impressed with this place. Broasted chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, German sample platter, chicken wrapped around shrimp dish, and chicken and wild rice soup all wonderful. Cheaper than many other Northwoods supper clubs. Great cocktails. Fun to see the history. Had a terrific time here.

Coming from Cali, I'll have to disagree with the reviews about being spendy. Had the French onion soup and a Reuben. Both were very good. J liked her soup as well and helped me with my Reuben. We walked around outside to see the bullet holes in the 2nd story window on the side where the Dillinger gang made their escape from Melvin Purvis and the FBI. Service was speedy and our waitress was friendly. If you are in the area stop in for a bite to eat. You won't regret it.

First, it is a bit spendy, but the food is good and the historic nostalgia is even better. I had the Pork Schnitzel, which was fantastic, and my fiancee had one of the chicken dishes. Her's was good, but not quite as good as the schnitzel. The history part of it is really fascinating as they left all the bullet holes from the famous shoot-out. Definitely worth checking out, but be prepared to have a slight wait and to pay a bit.

We are locals (well, Minocqua area so it's a bit of a drive, but worth it!) We took a business associate from a big city to Little Bo last night, and even he was impressed with the quality of the food. My blackened scallops with pico de gallo were cooked to perfection, and the coconut shrimp were also excellent, not overwhelmed by the coconut as often is the case. And you can't beat the Northwoods ambiance and lake views. By the way, the reason there is not more gangster memorabilia on display is that a good portion of it was stolen a couple of years ago.

Food was bad, service worst ever. Waitress got all 4 people's orders wrong and was surly. When we complained to the manager, she told us the waitress had too many tables and was busy! Really? Just because you're busy doesn't mean you can't be polite. Perhaps if she got the orders right, she wouldn't have been so busy fixing them!

    (1)
  • Jeff G.

For ambiance, you cannot beat the history of this place and you definitely have to stop by . For food, I thought it was OK, but was pricey for what you receive. I guess the idea is for the owners to make money and not spend too much for the actual product that the customers order. My idea of a great restaurant is that when you're done with your meal, you comment on the food being fantastic and you're WOW'd by the portion of food you received. That is what keeps people coming back time after time. Q to the owners: Do you dig deep into the pockets of your customers once or twice and then never see them again, or do you pack the place with repeat customers who will throw money at you? Little Bohemia...the ball is in your court on this! I understand that this is the North-woods and business can be seasonal, but maybe try to break the seasonal trend and make your establishment the "go to" place.

Well, I love this place. Maybe I am a sucker for North Woods kitsch, but I love the ambiance and decor, everything is just so charming, including the taxidermy. Taxidermy everywhere! The porch seating in spring/summer is delightful, and you have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by the beautiful lake landscape and gloriously tall pines. The service is very friendly and the staff is very knowledgeable about the menu items, as they should be. I really enjoyed my charbroiled burger -- it was nothing fancy, but it was a far cry from the massive portions that are rampant in my home of Philadelphia. The menu is pretty extensive and my parents, who come often, have sampled much of it and their taste is quite discriminating. I don't understand all the negative critiques of the food. I wasn't expecting anything gourmet or too contemporary -- come on, this is a northwoods lodge. It is simple food, excellently prepared, no frills. I have to mention the Dillinger bullet holes and memorabilia. It's just too cool. They don't make a huge deal out of it, it's just part of the deal at Little Bohemia.

The atmosphee is pure Up North Wisconsin. The food is average. The service is below average. Once the cache' of the bad movie filmed there wears off I am concerned that this place will go down hill as they have pushed away most of the locals who were at one point regulars. We are in the North wood often and really only stop in the afternoon for cocktails. For dinner we always go somewhere else.

Four stars is mostly for the nostalgia of this place. Food is ok but pricey. I enjoy going though whenever I'm up that way.

Fun place off the beaten path... Highly recommended to stop by and see some history. Plus, drinks are plentiful and cheap. Bonus: Spotted cow on tap for $3. Wisconsin, have I told you lately how much I love you???

I've been coming here on family vacations for many years. This restaurant is notable for it's gangster history (which is hard for me to romanticize) and its lodge quality; set in tall wooded landscape, built out of logs and the walls are covered with deer head, moose head and bear skin. It has a real back woods charm. Along with its back woods charm, it sits on the edge of Little Star Lake with a beautiful view from the dining room. If you are renting a cabin on the chain of lakes, you can drive your boat up to the restaurant and dock it while you eat. Very cool. The food is quite good by North Woods standards and is considered to be "dining out." If you are from the city and accustomed to eating fine cuisine, you may want to check your judgment at the door. I recommend any of the meat items, as they seem to know how to cook meat. The service is slow but friendly. Be prepared to hang out for a while and enjoy your stay.

I read the other review, and I have been here soooo many times. Definitely the history around little bohemia is very cool.... and that Johnny Depp recently filmed part of his new movie here, in the North Woods of Wisconsin is pretty cool too.... But the food here is ok... i mean i guess for the North Woods it is above average... but since it the new owners - i think about 2 years now? - the food is definitely not as good. If you happen to be in this neck of the woods - NO PUN INTENDED - :)).... then i would definitely go there to check it out, the original bullet holes are pretty cool... but the food is just average, ok but average... for a nice dinner, there are definitely many local places that have really good food.... the bar is good size, so if u just want to stop for drinks it is great for that. FYI... be forwarned however, if u r getting a burger at lunch, everything is ala carte - lettuce, tomatoe etc.

We've had breakfast several times at Little Bohemia, and lunch once or twice. Great diversity of breakfast choices. Love the quality of the food! Better than average service, especially for 'up north'. Really like the atmosphere. The view of the lake is gorgeous.

For many years I have come up to this area for fishing in the summer or snowmobiling in the winter and I always wanted to go here. Then they shot that movie with Johnny Depp and the place was crazy for a while with all the tourists wanting to eat where the shootout happened. Finally on a sled trip, our small group went here. Overall none of us were wowed. It seemed expensive and the food was OK. It was not bad or anything, but it was just OK. I would probably not make a point to go here again.

Consistently quality food. We went with a party of 8 adults and 2 kids. We ordered prime rib, the captains platter, filet and some other entrees. All were of high quality. The service was good, but slightly on the slow side. The muddled old fashioneds and HUGE grasshoppers were to die for!

Stopped here a couple weekend ago to have lunch and get a little slice of gangster history. Arrived close to 2pm, which apparently is the time they stop serving lunch. Hostess was friendly and seated us, but the waitress was less than thrilled with being assigned a late lunch table. She rushed us through our order and gave us a clear vibe that she wanted us outta there asap, so we ended up eating our lunch as quickly as possible. Consequently, can't say much about the taste of the food since we pretty much inhaled it! We were looking forward to walking around and soaking in all the Dillinger/FBI shootout history but were somewhat disappointed. When you walk in the front door there's a small display case with a few items, some newpaper articles on a wall, and near the hostess check-in is a very small area where they sell a few t shirts. Outside, you need to search around to find the bullet holes in the walls, fences, and windows of the building. It's a large, cool looking building and the lake behind the property is gorgeous. However, not sure why they haven't taken the effort to post a few signs around the property explaining details of the historic shootout?

This place is one of the best restaurants in the area. Went there for friday fish fry and the food was excellent, hot and the staff was very friendly and courteous. Be warned, sometime in June--it's first come, first serve--no reservations. We arrived around right when dinner starts at 5 pm and soon after it was packed. So show up plenty of time before the summer rush. As of late May 2011, there is a new bar section that has been added behind the old bar. The door leads out towards the boat dock area. There's a big 60" flat screen TV, full bar and tables to stand. Very nice add on. Overall, great experience and highly recommend. As a bonus, you get to see the place where John Dillinger slipped away from the FBI--it was featured in the movie Public Enemies with Johnny Depp.

I've been going here since I was a little girl and I really do love it. Kind of in the middle of nowhere, this restaurant is the place to go to when you're up in the north woods. Not only does it have great food, it has a fabulous history behind it too. Though most probably are more familiar with the movies than the actual history of Little Bo, it's really a fun place to see the authentic bullet holes from 90 years ago. I have never had a bad experience with food here. The broiled walleye is absolutely to die for and definitely my favorite meal. They also have a great platter of cheese and other fun appetizers before you get your full meal. The service has always been friendly, but we have run into a few moments where we would wait 10 minutes or so until we saw our server again. Regardless, it's always been a good experience for my family and me. The decor of the restaurant is your standard Northwoods Wildlife look so that also feels pretty homey. However, one of the neatest things about Little Bo are the bullet holes to the right of the big dining area. There are some in the wall, but one of the neatest things the owners did back in the 20s is make sure the bullet holes in the glass windows were preserved. It's really amazing that they've preserved these authentic holes for so long. Even though I've been here dozens of times, I still stare at the holes if we're seated near there. Also, back in the day, my cousins and I would go here when we were little and our parents bought us the rubber band guns that used to be in their gift shop. Unfortunately, there hasn't been a gift shop in a long time. However, you can still buy some fun t-shirts or sweatshirts. And I believe since the current movie made the restaurant so popular, you can also buy other fun items too like mugs or even the china that goes along with the restaurant. They also recently came out with a new sky deck viewing area (or something to that effect). Great place with good food and delightful people. Definitely go check it out if you're up there.

This place has a super cool vibe surrounding it. Now just a restaurant, it used to be a secluded lodge that was a favorite of John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson back in the 30's. In 1934, someone tipped the Feds off to the location of the 2 notorious gangsters, and what followed was a shootout outside of the lodge and more embarrassment for J. Edgar Hoover as the 2 got away. They kept the windows that were riddled with bullet holes and kept mementos that the gangsters left and have them on display. Apparently they were, uhh, backed-up, as they had an unusual amount of Ex-Lax on them. Curious... The lodge upstairs is now closed, and the only people allowed up there recently were Johnny Depp and Christian Bale when they filmed there for their upcoming John Dillinger movie. Judging from the pictures on the wall, Mr. Depp looks dashing at a 30's gangster. SO ANYWAYS, the food was really good, I had chicken marsala. SO YUMMY. And the house wine wasn't bad either. If you don't mind checking out a little bit of American history and lots of dead animals on the wall, and you're in BFE Wisconsin, I'd go check it out.

I had dinner here the other night with a group of family/friends. The food was very good and our server was great as well. A few in the party wandered off to check out the bullet holes in the wall; there are now pics of the owners with Johnny Depp in the waiting area. I want to know why there are none of Christian Bale?! Anyhow, if you want a fish fry on a Wednesday night, head here.

We figured a Thursday night would be pretty easy but when we walked in a 7pm, there was a 30 minute wait. Not a problem, we were lucky enough to be able to sit in the bar area with 4 kids. The bar area was awesome, great pictures and a lot of history. Guy playing piano in the corner gave it. Nice touch. Then there was the wait! Waited for a table, waited on the bar tender, waited on our server and finally waited and waited for dinner. We skipped the appetizer, ordered dinner with our first drinks and didn't even think of desert and we were there for a hair over 2.5 hours! I understand if your a group of adults having a night out or going to a really busy place but over 2 hours is a bit much! To be totally fair, the good was good. Green pea relish tray was good, had peanuts which was odd but good. Had the baked French onion soup and it was right on spot! Wife and kids were pleased with their salads. I was glad to see some good german dishes. Tough choice between the pork shank or the schnitzel. Pork shank was the winner and it was super tender! Great german tastes with the kraut and noodles All in all nice place, not the most efficient but good food. Pretty pricey as we'll be I think it is expected.

I was really looking forward to my visit - I'm a big history nerd. However, I was a bit disapointed. I wanted more if the story - especially after hearing that the story wasn't told that accurately in the movie. I guess that's just the history nerd in me! :) The food was okay. I thought the prices were a high for the quality. The service wasn't that great either. Our waitress must have been really busy. We didn't see a lot of her! I would recommend a reservation. We got there at 5 on a Thursday and had to wait 40 minutes for a table for two. I think they have an awesome opportunity to take advantage of their past and the movie they were featured in. I hope they will in the future!

Great old school supper club feel. Food was great, and staff was attentive and polite. Steaks and chicken were perfectly cooked. Very cool history too. We'd go again for sure.

Arrived with a 7 PM reservation hostess told us in a gruff tone "it will be at least 20-30 minutes the kitchen is all backed up" the restuarant was 3/4 empty. Got some sad story about not properly staffed blah blah blah. Still trying to live on the Dillenger theme. Food mediocre.

Had a really bad experience with a waitress here...now to preface I have visited this place for years but had not been here for at least 10 years. My wife is vegetarian and asked to have one the sandwiches but to replace the turkey with cheese. A fairly simple request and here was our waitresses first response: " Your asking the cooks to rewrite the menu" Next line: "Maybe you would just like a salad?" (because obviously if you are a vegetarian then you only eat salads) she then went to check with the cooks if they were capable of picking up cheese instead of turkey and putting it on the sandwich . She then returned and said it was ok. Now for the kicker response. My step father asked for the same sandwich but with the turkey and here condescending, rude response was: "So you want the sandwich as it's supposed to be" Really? As it's supposed to be? This of course made my wife feel even more awkward... it was a very off putting comment. This waitress who was an older woman with dark curly hair just seemed like she did not want to be there and made my wife feel like an idiot. We witnessed other waitresses who were extremely pleasant and seemed to be happy. The other thing that happened next was we had to wait an hour to get 4 simple entrees. The table next to us had a party of 6 and came in 15 minutes after we did and received their food way before we did. She obviously stalled our food. Bottom line is the food was ok and really if it wasn't for the bullet holes and John Dillinger fan fare this place would not be worth much. To our waitress....remember people come to a restaurant to be served not made to feel stupid because they choose to not eat meat. A good restaurant will accommodate all customers...vegetarians or gluten free or whatever. Bottom line: All the bullet holes and John Dillinger memorabilia does not make up for mediocre food and a rude, unhappy waitress .

Little Bo used to make a bigger deal out of their "Dillinger Museum", but they put all that stuff into storage for the dreadful Johnny Depp movie and never brought it back out, which was a shame. In fact, this is the town's pretty much only claim to fame, they really should do more with it. The food up there is pretty good, if a bit pricey. If you can get a seat as the sun sets over Little Star Lake, that's pretty awesome.

  • Steve D.

This place is living off their reputation. In a party of 4, two of us ordered the schnitzel. It was small and the breeding was stale. The spaetzle was bland and the smallest portion I've ever seen.. By half! Someone ordered the breasted chicken. They didn't like it. My wife had the chicken Parmesan. Not impressive. The service was friendly, but very slow. Nothing like years ago. I can't see coming back here. Certainly not for the food quality, or the service, or the prices!

Really enjoyed this little place! Aside from the famous John Dillenger (Johnny Depp) movie filmed here the place has a nice "up north" woodsy feel and some of the best French onion soup I've ever tasted.

We had the same experience as Norman M with the short dark curly haired waitress on Thursday 7/16. From the moment we stepped in the door - and waited over 15 minutes for her to seat us when the entire restaurant was empty other than the porch - it was clear that we were putting her out with just our mere presence. Then, God forbid, after lunch we had the audacity to ask same waitress if we could pay to take the Dillinger tour - if looks could kill. I can't understand why a restaurant would employ someone who so clearly dislikes her job and is put out by it. She made us feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome. On the other hand, there was another younger waitress who couldn't have been any nicer with a great attitude and a big smile on her face. We enjoyed our food and would have rated the restaurant a bit higher if it wasn't for "Mrs. Unpleasant".
